VENEER FACE CUTS The way in which a log is cut determines the appearance of a veneer's texture, grain and color. Faces will of course have natural variations in grain inherent in the species and cut, and the following illustrations are simplifications of these variations. For the look that's best for your project, involve Western Oregon Door early in the selection process.

Rotary
Cut -Following the log's annual growth rings,
this cut provides a generally bold, random appearance. |

Plain Sliced -Sliced parallel to a line through the center of the log, cathedral and straight-grained patterns result. Since individual pieces of veneer are kept in the order they're sliced, a natural grain progression results when assembled. | ||||||||

Quarter
Sliced -A series of stripes is the result of
this cut, the width of which varies from species to species. A natural
distribution of Ray Fleck (flake) is characteristic of this cut in red
and white oak. |

Rift
Cut -This cut slices slightly across the medullary
rays, accentuating the vertical grain and minimizing the "flake." Rift grain
is restricted to red and white oak.
